Prostitution as we call it was once a sacred duty, a way of taking the war out of soldiers so that they could once again enter society as sane citizens. The religions of many cultures used the metaphor of sex to describe the earth and the sky--Nut and Geb, Shiva and Shakti, for examples, until the patriarchal cultures begin to take over and restrict feiminine sexuality. The church in the middle ages was terrified or woment and killed hundreds of them over a span of two hundred years.
